In collaboration with El Paso Community College, UTEP is pleased to offer 8-week summer research internships to juniors at Transmountain Early College High School (TMECHS) mentored by TMESCHS and/or EPCC faculty. These internships focus specifically on Infectious Diseases and Environmental Health—two of the seven BUILDing SCHOLARS areas of emphasis.
Students receive a stipend, write a research proposal, conduct a literature search, design and conduct a research project, and collect, analyze and present their research to a scientific audience. TMECHS summer research students participate in research seminars at both EPCC and UTEP.
The proximity of the EPCC and TMECHS campuses and the familiarity that TMECHS students have with EPCC helps to ease any anxiety of first-time exposure to a research environment, as students at this age may not be fully prepared for the demands of a research-intensive laboratory at UTEP or a research partner institution. Access to state-of-the-art research equipment is provided for these projects.
Ten junior-level BUILDing SCHOLARS scholarships per year are reserved upon transfer to UTEP.
