High school students are defined as students who have:

  • never attended a college or university, but may be enrolled in Early College High School (ECHS) or a dual-credit program.

Application Requirements and Instructions

All applications must be submitted using the online application system. We expect accuracy in all of the information and documents provided by the applicants. Any inaccurate information or false documents will disqualify the candidate from being selected as a scholarship recipient. Only complete applications (application form, transcripts, resume, and recommender's application) received by the deadline will be considered by the Scholarship Selection Committee.

Unofficial high school transcripts from all previously attended schools are required. The transcripts must be submitted directly to the UTEP Office of Admissions and Recruitment:

Office of Admissions and Recruitment
University of Texas at El Paso
Mike Loya Academic Services Building, Room 102
500 W. University Ave.
El Paso, TX, 79968

The transcripts should clearly show the name of the applicant, grade point average, class rank (if the high school ranks its students), class size and diploma type if applicable. High school transcripts should show work completed at least up to, and including, the second semester of the junior year. There may be a situation where applicants might want to wait for the senior year fall semester grades to post in the hopes that their transcripts and rankings improve. Applicants are reminded that only complete applications received by the application deadline will be reviewed and that all transcripts must be directly submitted to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. No exceptions.

SAT or ACT test scores are required. Test scores must be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment:

A resume that showcases the applicant’s participation in extracurricular activities, volunteer service, and/or athletics and employment history are required to be uploaded onto the online application system.

The name and email address of one person who can submit a recommendation on behalf of the applicant is required. This information will not be shared with anyone. A separate link will be sent to the applicant’s reference where they can submit a recommendation application once the applicant’s application is submitted.

This individual should know the applicant in a professional capacity. He/she should be able to speak to the applicant’s academic and research abilities; the applicant’s desire to become a research scientist in a biomedical field (e.g., addiction, cancer, neurodegenerative and chronic diseases, environmental health, health disparities, infectious diseases and translational biomedicine) upon graduating with a Ph.D.; and why he/she recommends the student for the scholarship.

Applicants who are selected as semifinalists will be contacted for personal interviews.
