We seek to support students who are strongly motivated to become biomedical, social, behavioral, health sciences, or biomedical engineering researchers and want to become biomedical research scientists by earning their Ph.D.

A college instructor or high school teacher in science, mathematics or a writing course is encouraged.

BUILDing SCHOLARS requires students to be fully committed to our program, which involves mandatory attendance at workshops, summer research experiences away from UTEP, research-mentored experiences at UTEP, etc. BUILDing SCHOLARS trainees must devote 19 hours/week to research activities. Students may participate in less intensive programs and extracurricular activities like student clubs.
No. Submit your most recent transcript that is available to you prior to the deadline.
It is ok to submit an unofficial transcript, but we may ask for an official transcript should you be invited for an interview.
You may still apply, but you must specify in your application that you have at least two years of further study to complete your degree. Some of the credits you have may not apply to your degree. BUILDing SCHOLARS requires a minimum of two-year commitment. In order to evaluate your application, we need to know that you have two years of further study at UTEP.
No. Evaluating high school seniors is not based on the ACT or SAT.
No. This program is designed for students earning their undergraduate degrees at UTEP.
