+ - Q: I am required to submit a graded writing sample as part of my application. What if my assignment is more than two pages long? Click to collapse
A: Choose only two pages that you feel best demonstrates your writing skills.
A: You may select any assignment that best showcases your writing ability.
A: No, but it must be a paper that you have submitted for a class.
A: A college instructor or high school teacher in science, mathematics or a writing course is encouraged.
A: A family member or friend should not submit a recommendation application.
+ - Q: Can I apply for multiple student training/academic programs at UTEP or participate in other campus activities? Click to collapse
A: BUILDing SCHOLARS requires students to be fully committed to our program, which involves mandatory attendance at workshops, summer research experiences away from UTEP, peer mentoring, research-mentored experiences at UTEP, etc. BUILDing SCHOLARS trainees must devote 19 hours/week to program activities. Students may participate in less intensive programs like UPBiT, but students cannot be in A-PRIME and BUILDing SCHOLARS at the same time. You may participate in extracurricular activities such as student clubs.
+ - Q: The application is due early January, but I can’t access my school during the winter break. What should I submit? Click to collapse
A: Please plan accordingly and work with your high school to get the transcripts prior to the deadline.
+ - Q: My high school will not have my transcripts ready for pick-up until after the deadline. Can the deadline be extended so that I can include my high school fall grades in the application? Click to collapse
A: No. Submit your most recent transcript that is available to you prior to the deadline.
A: It is ok to submit an unofficial transcript, but we may ask for an official transcript should you be invited for an interview.
+ - Q: I am a college student with more than 60 credit hours. Can I apply for the program? Click to collapse
A: You can still apply, but you must specify in your application that you have at least two years of further study to complete your degree. BUILDing SCHOLARS requires a minimum of a two-year commitment. In order to evaluate your application, we need to know that you have two years of further study at UTEP.
+ - Q: I am a high school senior that has not taken the ACT or SAT. Can I submit the results from another standardized test? Click to collapse
A: No. Evaluation of high school seniors will be based on either the ACT or SAT. The UTEP Office of Student Assessment and Testing offers an institutional ACT examination and scores are available that day. Visit testing.utep.edu for more information.
+ - Q: I would like to complete my year or two years of my undergraduate studies at UTEP and then transfer to another university. May I apply to BUILD? Click to collapse
A: No. This program is designed for students who will earn their undergraduate degrees at UTEP.
A: The program is a competitive program and all aspects of the application will be taken into consideration. See the scholarship selection process for more information.
A: We are seeking to support students who want to become biomedical research scientists that will earn their Ph.D., or M.D.-Ph.D. Click here for a list of BUILD-approved majors.
