This exciting summer program matches BUILDing SCHOLARS students with faculty from UTEP and Research Partner institutions, to conduct a full-time 10-week summer research project, based on mutual research interests and mentor availability. Research is conducted at both UTEP and partner institutions.
Students receive one-on-one guidance from faculty mentors on a cutting-edge biomedical research project in one of seven research nodes: addiction, cancer, degenerative and chronic diseases, environmental health, health disparities, infectious diseases and translational biomedicine.

Students also become part of a formal mentoring program to provide students with a faculty mentor who fits their unique research interests and skills.

- Current BUILDing SCHOLARS student who has finished his/her freshman, sophomore or junior year.
- The following prerequisites must be fulfilled prior to beginning the Summer Research Program:
- Research Foundations Course (SI 1301) or Research Foundations Workshop
- Responsible Conduct of Research Workshop
- Online CITI Training
- Students are required to complete a minimum of one summer (if they begin as juniors) and maximum of three summers (if they begin as freshmen).
- All UTEP BUILD students are already pre-accepted for the Summer Research Program.
- Students will be placed at a university based on their research interests and available mentors. Their preference for a specific university is considered as part of the matching process (but not guaranteed).
- Stipend
- Students receive their regular BUILD monthly stipend throughout the summer.
- Housing & Travel
- For students leaving El Paso, arrangements are coordinated by faculty and staff at each university. Travel, housing and food expenses for the 10 weeks are covered through the program.
- Research Supply Money
- Up to $1,000 in research supply money is awarded to each student’s research mentor so that he/she can provide the student with the supplies needed to complete the project.
- Daycare Cost Assistance
- Students can receive up to $1,800 to offset the costs of daycare for their dependent children while they are participating in the program.
Students:
- Become a member of a productive research team.
- Receive one-on-one guidance from faculty mentors on a cutting-edge biomedical research project in one of seven research nodes.
- Become part of a formal mentoring program, through an online mentoring platform, which includes an innovative online profile-based mentor matching protocol designed to provide students with a faculty mentor who fits their unique research interests and skills.
Students:
- Network with peers and faculty mentors.
- Build research skills and experiences.
- Make important connections with potential graduate programs and doctoral advisors.
- End of March: Students will be matched with a faculty mentor who shares their research interests at one of the participating institutions.
- April: Students will attend an orientation event to review the details and logistics of the program.
- May–August (exact dates vary based on placement): Students will participate in a 10-week summer research program.
